Sources and Data Notes

Every price on WattIndex comes from a published dataset. This page lists the datasets, how often they update, and the notes a careful reader needs before reusing a figure.

Datasets, periods and update cadence

Eurostat nrg_pc_204 (household)
Electricity prices for household consumers, all bands, all tax bases, half-yearly from 2007-S1. This site’s headline view is band DC (2,500 to 4,999 kWh per year), all taxes and levies included. Updated twice a year, in spring for the second half of the previous year and in autumn for the first half of the current year.
Eurostat nrg_pc_205 (business)
Electricity prices for non-household consumers, all bands, all tax bases, half-yearly from 2007-S1. This site’s headline view is band IC (500 to 1,999 MWh per year), excluding VAT and other recoverable taxes (tax basis X_VAT); the incl. all taxes view is I_TAX. Updated twice a year on the same schedule as nrg_pc_204.

Notes on this data

Half-yearly averages
These are average prices over a six-month period, not spot prices and not the price on any one tariff. A household on a fixed deal, a variable tariff or a regulated price can pay more or less than the average shown.
USA and Canada
No figures for the USA or Canada appear on this site. Those averages come from different statistical systems with different methods, so they are not placed in the same ranking as the Eurostat series here. If that changes, they will be published as a separate, clearly labelled panel.
Currency
All prices are shown in euro per kilowatt hour. For countries outside the euro area, Eurostat converts national prices to euro, so exchange rate movements form part of the change shown for those countries.
Country coverage
Countries appear when Eurostat publishes a value for them. The United Kingdom has no values in these datasets after H1 2020, so it is not part of the ranking.
Gaps
Where a half-year value is missing for a country, the gap is shown as a gap. WattIndex does not estimate, interpolate or carry forward a missing figure.
Corrections
Eurostat sometimes revises a published value. When a value changes in the source, the figure here is updated at the next refresh and the page’s retrieval note is updated with it.

United Kingdom: energy price cap (Ofgem)

The United Kingdom has no values in the Eurostat datasets used on this site after H1 2020, so it is kept out of the European ranking and shown here on its own basis. Ofgem, the British energy regulator, sets a price cap on standard variable tariffs. For the period 1 October to 31 December 2026 the cap is 26.32 pence per kWh of electricity plus a standing charge of 54.83 pence per day, for a household paying by direct debit. The cap is expressed in pounds sterling and includes a daily standing charge, so it is not converted or merged into the Eurostat euro-per-kWh ranking.
